Questions

Sheet music to MIDI, explained.

How does scanning sheet music to MIDI work?

The score is read note by note — pitches, rhythm, key and time signature. From that, a MusicXML score is built, and the MIDI file is derived from it. That means the MIDI reflects the actual notation, not an audio guess.

MIDI or MusicXML — which one do I want?

MIDI is for listening and for DAWs: it stores pitches and timing. MusicXML is for editing and printing: it keeps slurs, dynamics and layout, and opens in MuseScore, Sibelius or Dorico. You get both here — same recognition, two exports.

How do I play the MIDI file?

The quickest way is “Listen”: it plays your scan right in the browser. A MIDI file holds only notes and timing, no sound — the program that plays it needs instrument sounds. MuseScore (free) and GarageBand come with them. VLC doesn’t, and says “MIDI synthesis not set up”. To set it up once: download and unzip GeneralUser GS. In VLC, open Tools → Preferences (on a Mac: VLC → Preferences), choose “All” under “Show settings” at the bottom left, then Input / Codecs → Audio codecs → FluidSynth; click “Browse”, pick the .sf2 file from the unzipped folder and save. After a restart, VLC plays MIDI files.

Which scans and photos work best?

Printed music, from single parts to piano and choir (beta) — as a photo, scan or PDF. We measure the staff line spacing before processing: below 10 pixels we reject the capture instead of guessing — move closer or re-scan at a higher resolution.

Is it really free?

With a free account, the first 4 staves of every piece are free. Each further page costs €1.99, no subscription. Please double-check any measures the ledger flags.
