Why neumascan

Most scanners read the pitches — and throw the music away.

If you want to reuse a scanned part — transpose it, re-engrave it, hand it to students — you need more than the right notes: slurs, dynamics and phrasing have to survive. That is exactly where existing tools fail.

Measure ledger

Errors are found, not hidden.

Every measure is checked against the time signature. Anything that doesn't add up shows in the measure ledger — one glance tells you how much work is left, and one click takes you there.

31 of 32 measures add up Measure 14: 3¾ of 4 beats

Pre-check

Honest before processing.

If your photo's resolution isn't good enough, we say so before you wait — not after a useless result. No other scanner does this.

Complete

Complete, not approximate.

Slurs, dynamics and articulation end up in the file — including whether they sit above or below the staff.

Export

Open it, keep working. No cleanup.

The goal: MusicXML that opens in MuseScore, Sibelius or Dorico with zero cleanup.

    one glance

The measure ledger flags every bar whose beats don't add up.

Print a PDF — transposed if you like — or download MusicXML and MIDI to keep working in your notation software.

Honesty

Below 10 pixels, we don't guess.

Everything depends on one number: the staff line spacing of your photo in pixels. If it's too small, the difference between one and two beams is smaller than the image noise — no serious recognition is possible, and we say so instead of shipping a broken file.

Tip: fill the frame with the page and shoot straight from above.

  • < 10 pxrejected
  • 10–14 pxwarning first
  • 15–19 pxwith a warning
  • ≥ 20 pxfull processing

Perfect — full processing.

Enough resolution for beams, slurs and dynamics.

Demo

Try it with a real page.

Printed music — études, orchestral parts, vocal lines, and piano, choir and full scores as a beta. neumascan can't do handwriting yet.

Library

What the library adds.

Your free account is your library: your scans run there and stay there — and a whole part fits into one scan.

  • Several pages

Every page of a part in one scan — from a PDF or from several photos.

  • Phone capture

Scan a QR code on your computer, take photos with your phone — the pages show up right away.

  • Score editor

Fix flagged spots right next to the original photo instead of in another program.

  • Everything saved

Your scans stay in your library until you delete them.

Questions

Quick answers.

What is MusicXML?

The open interchange format for music notation. Every major app — MuseScore (free), Sibelius, Dorico, Finale — opens it, slurs, dynamics and articulation included; that's where you transpose, lay out and print. MIDI, by contrast, only knows notes and timing.

How do I play the MIDI file?

The quickest way is “Listen”: it plays your scan right in the browser. A MIDI file holds only notes and timing, no sound — the program that plays it needs instrument sounds. MuseScore (free) and GarageBand come with them. VLC doesn’t, and says “MIDI synthesis not set up”. To set it up once: download and unzip GeneralUser GS. In VLC, open Tools → Preferences (on a Mac: VLC → Preferences), choose “All” under “Show settings” at the bottom left, then Input / Codecs → Audio codecs → FluidSynth; click “Browse”, pick the .sf2 file from the unzipped folder and save. After a restart, VLC plays MIDI files.

What kind of music works?

Printed single parts: études, wind and string parts, vocal lines. As a beta also piano, choir and full scores with up to 5 staves per system — such a page counts like any other. Not yet: handwriting, tablature and larger scores.

Why does a scan take about 3 minutes?

Because we read more than pitches: slurs, dynamics and articulation are recognized one by one, then the measure ledger checks every bar. The scan runs in your library — do something else meanwhile, or even close the page.

What does neumascan cost?

With a free account, the start of every piece is free: the first 4 staves, up to 5 pieces a month — and your scans stay in your library. Each further page costs €1.99, with free pages on top from 10 pages, and packs start at €19.90 for 11 pages. No subscription, and pages you buy never expire. All prices include VAT; everything else is on the pricing page.

Can I upload any sheet music?

Only music you are allowed to use — public domain (the vast 19th-century repertoire) or your own material. Your scans stay private: there is no shared library, and only you and — for quality control — the neumascan team can see them. No scan is ever used for training.

What happens to my photo?

It is sent to an AI service for recognition and stays with the scan in your library until you delete it — on its own or with your account. We never use it for training. Privacy details (German).
